What I Wore This Week | 02
A lot of button down shirts and wide leg jeans, with a side of a humbling skin reaction.
Over the past two weeks, what I thought was a random breakout developed into what I now know to be “perioral dermatitis” and let me say, it’s been humbling! After years of what I could honestly call the best skin of my life, it’s been a great opportunity to practice what I preach: what I look like is the least interesting thing about me! I’m journaling my thoughts and reflections about the experience and will share more on that once I’m on the other side.
Until then, here’s what I wore…
WEDNESDAY: The first version of this look involved a blazer and a low heel, but I decided to swap for a shacket and a sneaker to keep it casual for a day at the office with my dog. This kalamata bag is proving to be a fast favorite and I really love how it pairs with my brown hat.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: For dinner out with girlfriends, I kept it monochromatic with a white button up and wide leg crop jeans. I added a cute little basket bag and swapped the strap for a tortoise one to keep the look very tonal.
THURSDAY: White shirts were clearly on the brain this week! I love the simplicity and ease of this look. I will admit, for school drop-off, I buttoned an extra button on the shirt!
FRIDAY: I started the day with a walk by the coast and actually packed a change of clothes for work, but ended up staying in my walking clothes all day — a very casual Friday, indeed!
SATURDAY: I’m very into loose jeans & partially buttoned shirts these days (as clearly demonstrated by the looks this week) and Saturday was no exception. It was a bit chilly, so I grabbed a sweater to throw on over my shoulders. Sometimes people ask if it’s just for style when I do that, and while, yes, it does create a layering effect, it also does really keep you warmer! Almost like a scarf. And by the end of the evening I ended up wearing the sweater as my top and just tossing the button down shirt in my bag, so it did in fact serve a highly practical purpose after all.
SUNDAY: Sunday was peak discomfort for me physically this week — between the skin situation and tweaking my back in my sleep, I basically laid down for the entire day. But we had made plans to host friends for dinner so I rallied! One espresso, a little face massage and a comfortable outfit later, I ended up having a great night. This look felt very beachy 70s and I was into it.
MONDAY: My skin rash was definitely at its worst on Monday, but thankfully I had a dermatologist appointment in the morning and am now officially on a treatment plan for the dermatitis. Happy to feel more in control of the situation now for sure! I knew since my skin was at a low point and I didn’t want to worsen it with makeup, I knew that I wanted to have a great outfit and wear a color that livened up my face a bit. I love how this look turned out, and can’t even count how many people stopped me to ask where I got the green blazer. It’s perfect for spring!
Which outfit from this week was your favorite? What outfit did you wear this week that you liked the most? Also, feel free to discuss the humbling nature of skin issues in the comments 🙃
Thank you for creating this in substack and for your email based newsletters! I quit social media three years ago, but there is some content (like yours) I still want to be able to consume.
Peri Menopause has been humbling for me! My skin body and temperament don’t seem to be like myself! It’s been a rollercoaster of self acceptance.
I was thinking about what you said the other day about having a uniform. And it really is important to have a no-brainer go to outfit solution that you can feel like ‘yourself’ in. All hail the outfit uniform! Hehe
